A good business opportunity has a clear product customers already want, transparent costs, written proof of how other owners are doing, real training and support, a fair contract, and a price you can afford without risking your household. Use the checklist below to score any offer before you pay a deposit.
The 12-point checklist
1. Real demand for what is sold
Customers should already be buying this product or service locally. Search the area, count competitors, and ask potential customers what they pay now. Demand you have to invent is a red flag.
2. Transparent total cost
The seller should give you a written list of every fee: initial, equipment, training, deposits, royalties, advertising, software, and renewal. If the number keeps changing, stop.
3. Written earnings information
Ask for any financial performance information in writing. In a franchise, look at the disclosure document’s financial performance section if one is provided. Verbal earnings claims are not evidence.
4. Current owners you can call
Get a full list of owners, not a hand-picked few. Call several, including ones who left the system. Ask about the first-year cash flow, the support they received, and whether they would buy again.
5. Training and support you can verify
Find out how many days of training, who delivers it, what ongoing help exists, and how fast the company responds to problems.
6. A fair, readable contract
Look at term length, renewal conditions, territory protection, transfer rights, termination triggers, and non-compete clauses. Have an attorney review it.
7. A history you can check
How long has the company operated? Has it been sued by owners or regulators? Check your state’s franchise or business opportunity registry, your state attorney general, and the Better Business Bureau.
8. Margins that survive reality
Build your own simple profit model with conservative sales, full costs, and your own salary. If it only works with best-case sales, the model is fragile.
9. Reasonable time to break even
Ask owners how long it took to cover costs. Make sure your savings can bridge that period plus a cushion.
10. A fit with your skills and goals
An excellent opportunity can still be wrong for you if it requires work you dislike or hours you cannot give.
11. A realistic exit
Could you sell the business later? Are transfer fees or approval rules attached? Is there a resale market?
12. No pressure tactics
Trustworthy sellers give you time and documents. High-pressure closing, “today only” pricing, and secrecy about terms point the other way.
A simple scoring method
| Score | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 10-12 items satisfied | Strong candidate | Continue to legal and financial review |
| 7-9 items satisfied | Promising but incomplete | Ask for missing documents and re-score |
| Under 7 | Too many unknowns | Walk away or keep searching |
Treat items 2, 3, 4, and 6 as deal-breakers: if any of them fails, the score does not matter.
Questions to ask the seller
- What is every dollar I will pay, and when?
- What percentage of owners are profitable, and how do you know?
- How many owners left in the past three years, and why?
- What happens if I want out?
- Which promises can you put in writing?

Frequently asked questions
What is the most important sign of a good opportunity?
Verifiable results from independent owners. Everything else is easier to fix than a model that does not produce profit for people like you.
Is a low price a good sign?
Not by itself. Low prices can hide expensive add-ons, and high prices can reflect real value. Judge the cost against the benefit and the proof.
How long should I take to decide?
Weeks to months is normal. If a seller will not wait for your attorney and accountant, that tells you something about the seller.
Do I need a lawyer?
For any contract with real money at stake, yes. A one-hour review costs far less than a bad agreement.
A worked example
Imagine you are comparing two home-service offers. Offer A has a lower price but cannot name a single current owner you can call, and it describes earnings only in a brochure. Offer B costs more, hands you a complete owner list, and spells out every fee in writing. On paper, Offer A looks cheaper; in practice, Offer B passes items 2, 3, and 4 of the checklist while Offer A fails all three. The more expensive option is usually the safer one because you can verify what you are buying. Run every serious candidate through the same twelve questions, write the scores down, and compare them side by side rather than trusting a first impression.
It also helps to bring a trusted third person to calls and meetings. A spouse, mentor, or advisor who is not emotionally invested will often notice vague answers that an excited buyer misses. Keep notes on what each representative says and compare them with the written documents later.
The bottom line
A good business opportunity survives scrutiny: its costs are clear, its claims are written down, its owners speak honestly, and its contract is fair. If you cannot verify the basics, keep looking. There are many opportunities, and patience is cheaper than regret.
